Enforce Right Traffic Laws For Real Traffic Highway Safety; Dah!

From the Radio Free Oklahoma Blog we get what’s wrong with today’s traffic law enforcement. Here the blog’s author introduces the concept of fraudulent citation writing (i.e., primarily for government revenue) by quoting Chad Dornsife:

“ Today, more than 90% of traffic violations issued; and the
majority of traffic stops, have no factual foundation from
A safety perspective.”

The point is; most enforcement is aimed at enforcing speed limits that are simply not designed to minimize traffic accidents. In fact, most of today’s speed limits are set via politics instead of based on sound traffic engineering principles (See Best Highway Safety Practices web site). In other words, speed limits are mostly lower than engineers want because “we the people” usually think lower is better.

But there is some real negative here.

First, drivers become very cynical about safe driving laws because they know the police are enforcing laws, not for safety, but for income.

Second, and more important, enforcing the wrong speed limits does not minimize traffic accidents. We keep having 42,000 deaths and tens of millions of injuries on our roads every year.

What’s Worse Than Dealing With A Single Government Bureaucracy?




The U.S. Post Office, FEMA, The FDA, The FED are all prime examples of abject government failures. For instance, when was the Post Office in the black and how about FEMA’s leadership following Katrina?

Now, here’s a shocker; these failures pale in comparison to the Highway Safety organization in your city and nation. The fractionalization is off the chart. I stopped counting at 22 the number of local, state, and Federal agencies that “share” in making our city’s roads safe.

It’s actually kind of pathetic, when accidents go down about 22 government bureaucrats take a bow; but when accidents increase not a word from anyone. Start counting the agencies in your town.

Just within our city limits, we have the city police, city traffic engineers, state D.O.T., the traffic courts, city council, State Legislature, U.S.Congress, the county highway patrol, the county traffic engineers. etc. etc.

Any real traffic highway safety improvements for MADD and SADD must address this lack of accountability and organizational complexity.

What, for instance, would be wrong with one person being given the responsibility for making our city’s streets safe then being held accountable? Folks, this is management 101 but completely absent in today’s highway safety.

SADD and MADD Need More Tickets Written

No One Is Watching



Today’s highway safety story of the day is titled, “ Trooper, I didn’t write enough tickets."
Claims he got fired for not writing tickets.

Here’s the shocker: The Highway Patrol defends the firing with their official statement on the incident, “ticket quotas violate FHP policy.”

Wow, why not quotas if drivers create most of the havoc on our roads. I mean why not write bunches more tickets ---------- but for the right offences. If the Highway patrol is worried about how such a policy looks to the voter just donate the fines to a good charity. That way no one could ever blame the cops for doing it for the money.

You see "not" writing bunches of tickets sends a signal to unsafe drivers. Simply stated, these criminals don’t think about ever getting caught driving like hoodlums because well, they mostly never get caught. After all the cops are evidently taught, you don’t have to write a bunch of tickets, your bosses are not expecting you to.

Highway Safety for MADD & SADD

When Highway Safety Is Not On Public Safety Agenda
(or a Mayor's mind)


Just read one of my Mayor’s primary propaganda pieces for the year. Titled, “Citizen’s Budget Report” not one word about his crackerjack Highway Safety program.

To illustrate how significant this is, consider that in the same piece he does brag about his war on crime. In fact, he does so every chance he gets. And rightfully so.

For instance, under the section titled, Public Safety, our cops make the incredible claim that they have reduced Part I crimes an astounding 50% since 2000.

Now here’s the pertinent question, do you think he would make the same boast if traffic accidents had been reduced the same 50%? Sure he would, the fact that he never mentions traffic safety shows how low on the priority it is.

Now, let’s not get on my mayor too much; this is the way it is all over the country. Real Highway safety is out of most everyone’s mind.

Again, in this 110% political bragging piece not a word about highway safety.

Be Against Drunks and Unintended Subsidies

The MADD and SADD Subsidy :



It may surprise some but to the extent that MADD and SADD members are fanatical about their safe driving programs; they subsidize the unsafe driver that threatens us all every single day.

I mean don’t you ever have road rage at the SOB that tailgated you all the way to work this morning? More to the point haven’t you ever asked yourself; how is that guy allowed to drive?

Well, the more you learn about the politics of today’s highway safety; the more you’ll realize it is our disproportionately high auto insurance premium that keeps the unsafe driving our roads. You see, the really bad drivers could never afford to pay the premium their unsafe driving demands.

In other words, we safe drivers pay for those that refuse to drive safely so that we can then turn right around and dodge their every crazy move.

Against Drunk Driving and other safe road tactics

Against Drunk Driving Is Only A Single Tactic:




Whether you’re MADD and focused on the “don’t drink and drive” mission or SADD and focused on teenage drinking don’t forget: drinking is not the only issue killing our friends and families on our roads.

Indeed, the don’t drive and drink motto is but one tactic in the grand strategy of making our roads safe.

The truth is aggressive, careless, distracted , and reckless driving by stone sober citizens is a far greater problem. But here’s the good news:

By solving the general problem and the sub-component problems also get solved. For instance, what if we actually had an effective driving law enforcement program that guaranteed that all drivers were almost overnight transformed into highway safety fanatics and more importantly changed their driving habits to mimic the safest drivers on the road?

No more road rage; aggressive, careless, or reckless driving; almost no accidents.

By the way our system of traffic law enforsement would catch drunks before their drinking killed and maimed on the roads.
