Start Young With Traffic Highway Safety Training

In the last few blogs we’ve seen how one can study the surrounding traffic in a community and estimate whether that community has safe roads. Furthermore, we’ve also leaned the same type of observation can determine if an individual (your teen driver or his friends) knows anything about avoiding traffic crashes.

What a powerful tool!

Here’s another use of this powerful technique of simple observation. You can play games while the entire family is taking that long vacation drive. You can get your young kids to pick out the future highway killers by simple observation. Your 10 year old will be able to rate the driving habits of an individual, a community, or an entire state.

Folks, teach your kids this game while they are young. It will make them a highway safety fanatic their entire life. You see they can’t play this game unless they know the five secrets to safe driving.

Do you know these simple five rules? To learn more about real highway safety for please SADD and MADD members visit our web site for more information on how to eliminate traffic crashes at: WWW.StopCarCrashes.com

Traffic Highway Safety Not Rocket Science

From the last two postings, we know that predicting safe roads from "physical observation only" is possible. In other words you don’t need to be a traffic engineer, highway patrolman, or rocket scientist.

All you need to do is be very familiar with the five basic driving rules that equates to avoiding traffic crashes -------------------------------------------- Just five rules!

Make sure your family knows and follows them. Make sure the people that drive your family knows and follows them. Make sure your community, state, and nation knows and follows them.
That’s it, that’s all there is to eliminating almost all traffic accidents and never worrying about your loved ones when they are on the road.

Going back to the last two postings, Utah drivers come closer than Florida Drivers to following those five rules; hence my prediction by simple observing the Utah and Florida drivers.
How would you like to be able to predict the likely hood of traffic accidents by simply observing other drivers (especially your teens), or community of drivers?

Just think of how relaxed you’re sure that your loved ones were traffic accident avoidance robots? To learn more about real highway safety for please SADD and MADD members visit our web site for more information on how to eliminate traffic crashes at: WWW.StopCarCrashes.com

Predictable Traffic Highway Safety

Utah’s Roads Are Safer ----------------As Predicted!

On my last posting, I “predicted” that Utah’s roads were safer than my home state’s (Florida’s roads). More importantly, I made this prediction without looking at stat one. I based the prediction on simple observation while driving Utah roads while on vacation.

Upon returning to Florida from my vacation to Utah I looked up the statistics and sure enough Utah’s fatality rate per hundred thousand population was 38% safer than Florida’s (for 2008).

How did I make this prediction and what is the implication?

The how is simple, I and all my readers know that safe roads are mostly about 5 key safe-driving habits and these habits are easy to spot. The implication: If one can spot these “safe driving” habits; one can make sure their loved ones drive with those habits; and just as critical, can make sure everyone that drives a loved one also has these habits.

The good news it only takes about a 15 minute ride with anyone to know their risk potential on our dangerous roads. The fact is you, I, our families, and communities can avoid traffic accidents caused by those drivers that are aggressive, inattentive, drunk, or young (that don't drive with our safe driving habits).

Traffic Highway Safety In Utah

A MADD and SADD Lesson in Real Highway Safety

Spent the last two weeks driving Utah Roads; they're safer than Florida Rds. I conclude this without looking at any stats.

I base this on observation only. If you know what to look for it's easy to spot safe and unsafe roads. Here's a hint: safe roads equates to safe driving. And, Utah drivers are not in as big a rush and more importantly, drive with much healthier following gaps than do Florida drivers.

Traffic Highway Safety And The Problem STatement

Are Most Accidents Caused by Drunks or Teens?

That’s right, this is a trick question. Both driving populations are indeed deserving of their strong societal pressure. But technically it’s not the drinking or the youth that causes traffic crashes.

Folk’s it their unsafe driving that causes all the damage and destruction on our roads. The point is, non drinkers and older drivers can drive just as destructively.

Do you know specifically what driving habits cause all the problems and what we, as a society, can do about it? Do you know how to catch unsafe drivers before their future accident? Accidents Caused By Tailgating

BACK OFF For Real Traffic Highway Safety

If you’ve been reading this blog for any time then you know by now that one of the five laws for traffic highway safety is no tailgating. Specifically, if everyone on the road kept a 3-6 second following gap we could eliminate almost all traffic accidents.

So, the other day I drive up to a stop light and see a macho man riding a Harley without a helmet. On the back of his tee shirt are the words, back off. I laugh realizing how significant those words are in the battle to make our roads safe.

However, here’s the rest of the story: When the light turns green this idiot takes off right on the bumper of the car in front of him. The road is congested, no where to go and this suicide motorcyclists tailgates for miles.

Go back to our last posting. Again, in Florida 36% of all roadway fatalities in 2007 were pedestrians, bicyclists, or motorcyclists. Please don’t drive with bad driving habits, especially if you are helmetless motorcyclists.

Safety Drivers -- Secrete To Traffic Highway Safety

46% of Traffic Fatalities Are Roadways Most Vulnerable:

Just read a report from the Florida DOT that stated 36% of the fatalities on Florida roads in 2007 were pedestrians, motorcyclists, or bicyclists.

Folks, that’s 46%!!

Now, the next time you travel on a road note how many pedestrians, motorcyclists, and bicyclists you see. I’ll bet not many especially relative to the number of cars and trucks?

Let’s see; 36% of the fatalities associated with less than 1% of the users; something is wrong with this picture.

The wrong is simple, pedestrians, motorcyclists, and bicyclists are small, indeed practically hidden from view; and totally unaware of their risk when they are on or near a road. Here’s the secrete, to making our roads safe for roadway’s most vulnerable tripartite:

We need to make our roads safe for the hundreds of millions of cars and trucks to make it safe for the relatively few pedestrians, motorcyclists, and bikers.

Accidents Are Caused by Unsafe Drivers with Rights

Is Driving A Privilege Or A Right?

In the last posting we discussed placing cameras and radar units in the road to supplant cops in enforcing traffic laws; well ……………………………….

What’s the very first cry from the most aggressive drivers in our society? Remember, these guys are our enemy and don’t want any enforcement. In fact, the more you drive recklessly; the more you’re going to say, “cameras, huh; big brother is watching.” Then something like, “besides it’s unconstitutional to use cameras.”

To which I say, “poppycock!”

Folks, we are talking about a war on our roads everyday you or your family rides on our aggressive roads. Again, to quote my favorite quote:

“Since the founding of our nation, we’ve lost almost 500% more lives
on our roads than on the battlefields of all wars fought.”

Then I simply point out that driving America’s roads is a privilege not a right. You can drive
our roads as long as you adhere to our few simple laws, period.

By the way do you remember our five laws of the road from an earlier posting?

Accident Cause By: Not Enough Cops!

Accidents Caused by: Not Enough Good Cops?

From our last two postings let’s continue the discussion of “not enough good cops.”
So, what’s the answer if we don’t have enough cops to effectively enforce our traffic laws?

First, let’s better define the problem. Too many people drive like maniacs. Why?
Simple, these unsafe drivers don’t think they’ll get caught; because they, like us, don’t ever see a good cop when one is needed.

The solution, what if had a weapon that would almost guarantee everyone that drives poorly would get caught----- including drunks and wild teen drivers? Do you think our roads would get safe practically overnight?

Well folks, with today’s cameras and radar units we can catch unsafe drivers before they hit you or your family. And, we can ticket them automatically.

Now think about this, no more traffic law breakers, approximately no accidents, injuries, or need for auto insurance. Wow!

The best part of this solution, cameras with radar components would pay for themselves plus. No need to hire more good cops; in fact, you could free the cops for crime prevention.

Accidents Caused by: not enough Good Cops?

Accidents Caused by: not enough Good Cops?

From our last posting let’s continue the discussion of “not enough good cops.” It’s true, good cops are never seen enough from the perspective of we safe drivers.

But my guess is reckless and careless drivers see far too many cops enforcing today’s ineffective traffic laws. So, which is it: do we have to much enforcement or to little enforcement on our roads?

At Parents For Safe Roads our entire highway safety plan is based on the fact that people drive like fools for one reason and one reason only.

The unsafe see far too few police; think they can get away with reckless and aggessive driving, period.

We have far too little enforcement. And, there are many reasons for this including there is a big voting block of unsafe drivers. In fact, we have so many poor drivers / voters the law enforcement cops think its political suicide to really make our roads safe.

Here's the good news: In the next posting I'll explain how we can enforce traffic laws much more effectively but without any cost to your commuity.

Accidents Caused By: Not Enough Good Cops!

Where's a Good Cop When You Need One?

How many times have you been driving on the road, and some crazy passes you like you are sitting still? Or, someone aggressively changes lanes while everyone else is patiently waiting their turn?

And, right after witnessing a hostile action on your car; how many times have you then said, “where is a good cop when you need one?”

After decades of driving I’ve finally seen that good cop at the right time. Folk’s I have never witnessed this before. Yesterday while coming home from work, after nearly being blown off the road by cabby a copy actually pulled him over. I wanted to stop and kiss the cop.

And, this, in short, is what is wrong with today’s highway safety efforts----------- not enough good cops. Please SADD and MADD members visit our web site for more information on how to eliminate traffic crashes at: WWW.StopCarCrashes.com

Accidents Cause By What?

Accidents Caused By What?

Folks, fill in the blank. The point is, problem solving 101 teaches that step #1 in problem solving is: identify the problem.

So, why can’t Highway Safety Officials do that? If they could riding on our roads would not be so threatening ------------------- like every ride.

For example, for my 39 years in municipal Highway Safety I’d estimate that 99.9% of our efforts were to make safety improvements at intersections and along street segments as if the reckless and careless driving of motorists had nothing to do with all the accidents. Only problem with this focus on roads; again most all traffic accidents are caused by driver error. Do you see why “identifying the problem” is so critical.

If today’s traffic safety engineers took the time to first identify the problem they would conclude that it is indeed the driver stupid. Maybe then we could get to the solution to all the mayhem on our highways which would be driver focused not roadway improvement focused.

Setting Priorities For Traffic Highway Safety

Public Safety Priorities, A Master Mystery:

So, what is the top public safety priority in your community? Is it to stop crime, drugs, or eliminate traffic accidents?

With some training you can analyze your city’s web site for 10 minutes and probably know more about your city’s public safety priorities than your mayor. Honestly, eliminating traffic accidents is so far down the list; most citizens and politicians don’t have a clue what I’m talking about.

To prove it, ask yourself how many traffic crashes is your city willing to live with next year? Next, ask your mayor? Why the mystery?

SADD & MADD Do Away with "All" Crazy Driving

Crazies to Cops Ratio – Your Next SADD and MADD Project

With our SADD and MADD members so focused on drunk driving, the crazies to cop ratio highlights that there are other villains than drunks on the roads.

Our crazies to cop ratio is simply the number of crazy drivers divided by the number of cops you saw on the way to wherever you drove today.Routinely, I calculate a ratio of greater than 100, which means I see over 100 reckless, careless, or inattentive driving moves to every cop I see.

Think Air Cushion for Traffic Highway Safety

A 360 Degree Air Cushion For Traffic Highway Safety

So, how might one describe the five rules of the road that we presented a week ago?

Simple, UPS refers to their safe driving program like driving with a 360 degree air cushion. Folks, that starts with a 3-6 second following distance.

Now, picture every driver being required to drive with the same 360 degree air cushion. Think we would have 40,000 plus thousand and multiple millions injured on our roads every year?

No Accountability in Traffic Highway Safety!

Whom Do You Blame For What?

Talk about voter apathy! I'm here to tell you that your family’s #1 financial and health risk tomorrow and over the next year is when they climb into a car.

So, what do you know about traffic highway safety? What do you know about protecting your family from the other crazy drivers on the road?

For instance, do you even know how many traffic crashes occurred in your town last year? And, if they doubled from the previous year do you know whom to blame?

The Look & Feel Of Real Traffic Highway Safety

Ever Seen or Felt “Safe” Roads?

Now remember, the answer to this critical, traffic highway safety question says a lot about how you have prepared your family to avoid traffic accidents.

So, what does a safe road look and feel like?

Simple, “all” drivers are laid back, relaxed, and following our five rules of the road. There is no swearing as in today’s nasty road rage explosion; no one trying to cut you off as you merge; no one tailgating, no one speeding and dodging in and out of traffic.

RELAXED and no rage; do you get the picture?

Oh, yes a few other things: we have virtually no traffic crashes, need for auto insurance, intense parental worry about their teen's driving, fatalities or serious injuries to our loved ones.

Stop Unsafe Driving For Real Traffic Highway Safety

Unsafe Driving Habits Learned On Our Safest Roads

Today as I drove home from work I took about a 20 mile route on the Interstate. This was just before, what we traffic engineers call, peak hour about 4:30. The road volume was building but the speeds still high.

Folks, I swear 90% of the drivers were traveling at 80 mph and on someone’s bumper. If the first car had stopped we would have surely had one of those 30-40 car pileups.

What can we learn from this. First, our interstates are statistically our safest roads. This is because such super highways are limed access--------- no intersections and no driveways.

Now here’s the dirty little secret: because these highways are so easy to drive (un-safely) you can develop some very unsafe driving habits, like aggressively following too close or tailgating.
If you want to see how this is killing tens of thousands and injuring millions very year: please SADD and MADD members visit our web site for more information on how to eliminate traffic crashes at: WWW.StopCarCrashes.com

Traffic Highway Safety & Safe Drivers

Safe and Unsafe Drivers- The Difference

Last week we posted that the safe subsidized the auto insurance premiums for the unsafe drivers. Furthermore, this subsidy is what kept the unsafe driving with insurance because they could never afford what they should be paying.

Wow, how unsafe are these drivers?

The safest drivers in our society have on average a traffic accident every 66 years while the riskiest drivers have one every other year. Do you now see why the unsafe can't afford their own insurance without our help?

Then our job as the safest drivers is to get the unsafe transformed into safe drivers so that our roads will be safe for our families; and we no longer have to subsidize anyone’s auto insurance.
