What’s Worse Than Dealing With A Single Government Bureaucracy?




The U.S. Post Office, FEMA, The FDA, The FED are all prime examples of abject government failures. For instance, when was the Post Office in the black and how about FEMA’s leadership following Katrina?

Now, here’s a shocker; these failures pale in comparison to the Highway Safety organization in your city and nation. The fractionalization is off the chart. I stopped counting at 22 the number of local, state, and Federal agencies that “share” in making our city’s roads safe.

It’s actually kind of pathetic, when accidents go down about 22 government bureaucrats take a bow; but when accidents increase not a word from anyone. Start counting the agencies in your town.

Just within our city limits, we have the city police, city traffic engineers, state D.O.T., the traffic courts, city council, State Legislature, U.S.Congress, the county highway patrol, the county traffic engineers. etc. etc.

Any real traffic highway safety improvements for MADD and SADD must address this lack of accountability and organizational complexity.

What, for instance, would be wrong with one person being given the responsibility for making our city’s streets safe then being held accountable? Folks, this is management 101 but completely absent in today’s highway safety.

But being against and knowing what to do about it are two different things. Traffic accidents are the #1 killer and crippler of teenagers, period.

So, what to do?

Here’s a hint; avoiding traffic accidents is a learned behavior and it is simple. MADD moms did you catch that? Avoiding traffic accidents can be taught. The safest drivers in America are almost never involved in a traffic crash.

On average teenage drivers are almost 4500 times more likely to be in an accident than the safest drivers. All we have to do is figure out how the safest drivers avoid accidents; and make sure our teens and everyone else copies them.

Well, the secret is convincing your parents that you are not only a safe and responsible driver but fanatical about it. Remember, you parents love you and just want you home knowing full well that you being on the road is dangerous.

So, get fanatical about highway safety. Show them by knowing how to eliminate traffic accidents. Show them by pointing out those drivers that need to be off the road. Show them by analyzing or rating other drivers and actually calculating their safe driving score. An Umpiring Lesson for SADD and MADD:


If you can stand the boredom at the next baseball game you watch; note how the umpire calls balls and strikes. The good umpires almost universally see the pitch, hesitate for an instant; then call it either a ball or strike.

What can MADD and SADD members learn from this lesson? Simple, the reason for the hesitation is to let the action register with the brain before acting on what the eyes see.

Well, ditto for drivers who need to make critical decisions in their everyday driving. Sometimes we need to hesitate and take in what is happening around us, hesitate; then make the left turn, or lane change -------------------------- after our brain confirms what our eyes are telling us; that it's safe.

MADD Moms Protecting SADD bicyclists

SADD Bicyclists MADD About All the Aggressive Cars:


Today’s highway safety lesson of the day comes from a recent “letter to editor” at WWW.Timesunion.com entitled:
“Bicyclists Need to Keep Up Speed”

The letter was in response to a bicyclist who had written, “drivers disregarding the rules of the road, were creating an unsafe environment for bicyclists.”

The driver responded by saying, “bicyclists held up drivers with their slow speed and needed to speed up.”

Well, both are right. Cars do drive like bats out of hell and bicyclists ride too slow. The bottom line we at highwaysafetyfanatics are focused on making roads safe for cars. Our feeling is that once the roads are safe for the much bigger, easier to see, cars; bicyclists may have a chance to share the road safely.

Until then here is a piece of advice for the bicycle enthusiasts; stay off the busy roads especially those with bike paths. Folks, bike paths scream the road is safe when it is not.

To summarize, MADD moms need to keep their SADD bicyclists off the busier roads, at least until we make the roads safe. Ask your kid about the route they take while riding their bike.

In the last posting, I made the incredible claim that I could teach anyone how to quantitatively rate their city’s effectiveness in making its streets safe. Furthermore, such an assessment could be done in minutes by analyzing that city’s web site.

Anyway, here’s a hint. Go back a few postings and review my five laws for safe roads. The fact is, if we want safe, friendly roads rather than the dangerous, hate filled ones we presently have; all we need to do is make sure everyone drives according to our new five laws of the road.

Pay $50 - $200 to take any “defensive course”; and you’ll be inundated with detail safe driving tips. For instance, I just took one the country’s most popular courses and stopped counting at 100 suggested dos and don’ts for avoiding accidents.
