Traffic Highway Safety And The Problem STatement

Are Most Accidents Caused by Drunks or Teens?

That’s right, this is a trick question. Both driving populations are indeed deserving of their strong societal pressure. But technically it’s not the drinking or the youth that causes traffic crashes.

Folk’s it their unsafe driving that causes all the damage and destruction on our roads. The point is, non drinkers and older drivers can drive just as destructively.

Do you know specifically what driving habits cause all the problems and what we, as a society, can do about it? Do you know how to catch unsafe drivers before their future accident? Accidents Caused By Tailgating

BACK OFF For Real Traffic Highway Safety

If you’ve been reading this blog for any time then you know by now that one of the five laws for traffic highway safety is no tailgating. Specifically, if everyone on the road kept a 3-6 second following gap we could eliminate almost all traffic accidents.

So, the other day I drive up to a stop light and see a macho man riding a Harley without a helmet. On the back of his tee shirt are the words, back off. I laugh realizing how significant those words are in the battle to make our roads safe.

However, here’s the rest of the story: When the light turns green this idiot takes off right on the bumper of the car in front of him. The road is congested, no where to go and this suicide motorcyclists tailgates for miles.

Go back to our last posting. Again, in Florida 36% of all roadway fatalities in 2007 were pedestrians, bicyclists, or motorcyclists. Please don’t drive with bad driving habits, especially if you are helmetless motorcyclists.

Safety Drivers -- Secrete To Traffic Highway Safety

46% of Traffic Fatalities Are Roadways Most Vulnerable:

Just read a report from the Florida DOT that stated 36% of the fatalities on Florida roads in 2007 were pedestrians, motorcyclists, or bicyclists.

Folks, that’s 46%!!

Now, the next time you travel on a road note how many pedestrians, motorcyclists, and bicyclists you see. I’ll bet not many especially relative to the number of cars and trucks?

Let’s see; 36% of the fatalities associated with less than 1% of the users; something is wrong with this picture.

The wrong is simple, pedestrians, motorcyclists, and bicyclists are small, indeed practically hidden from view; and totally unaware of their risk when they are on or near a road. Here’s the secrete, to making our roads safe for roadway’s most vulnerable tripartite:

We need to make our roads safe for the hundreds of millions of cars and trucks to make it safe for the relatively few pedestrians, motorcyclists, and bikers.

Accidents Are Caused by Unsafe Drivers with Rights

Is Driving A Privilege Or A Right?

In the last posting we discussed placing cameras and radar units in the road to supplant cops in enforcing traffic laws; well ……………………………….

What’s the very first cry from the most aggressive drivers in our society? Remember, these guys are our enemy and don’t want any enforcement. In fact, the more you drive recklessly; the more you’re going to say, “cameras, huh; big brother is watching.” Then something like, “besides it’s unconstitutional to use cameras.”

To which I say, “poppycock!”

Folks, we are talking about a war on our roads everyday you or your family rides on our aggressive roads. Again, to quote my favorite quote:

“Since the founding of our nation, we’ve lost almost 500% more lives
on our roads than on the battlefields of all wars fought.”

Then I simply point out that driving America’s roads is a privilege not a right. You can drive
our roads as long as you adhere to our few simple laws, period.

By the way do you remember our five laws of the road from an earlier posting?

Accident Cause By: Not Enough Cops!

Accidents Caused by: Not Enough Good Cops?

From our last two postings let’s continue the discussion of “not enough good cops.”
So, what’s the answer if we don’t have enough cops to effectively enforce our traffic laws?

First, let’s better define the problem. Too many people drive like maniacs. Why?
Simple, these unsafe drivers don’t think they’ll get caught; because they, like us, don’t ever see a good cop when one is needed.

The solution, what if had a weapon that would almost guarantee everyone that drives poorly would get caught----- including drunks and wild teen drivers? Do you think our roads would get safe practically overnight?

Well folks, with today’s cameras and radar units we can catch unsafe drivers before they hit you or your family. And, we can ticket them automatically.

Now think about this, no more traffic law breakers, approximately no accidents, injuries, or need for auto insurance. Wow!

The best part of this solution, cameras with radar components would pay for themselves plus. No need to hire more good cops; in fact, you could free the cops for crime prevention.

Accidents Caused by: not enough Good Cops?

Accidents Caused by: not enough Good Cops?

From our last posting let’s continue the discussion of “not enough good cops.” It’s true, good cops are never seen enough from the perspective of we safe drivers.

But my guess is reckless and careless drivers see far too many cops enforcing today’s ineffective traffic laws. So, which is it: do we have to much enforcement or to little enforcement on our roads?

At Parents For Safe Roads our entire highway safety plan is based on the fact that people drive like fools for one reason and one reason only.

The unsafe see far too few police; think they can get away with reckless and aggessive driving, period.

We have far too little enforcement. And, there are many reasons for this including there is a big voting block of unsafe drivers. In fact, we have so many poor drivers / voters the law enforcement cops think its political suicide to really make our roads safe.

Here's the good news: In the next posting I'll explain how we can enforce traffic laws much more effectively but without any cost to your commuity.

Accidents Caused By: Not Enough Good Cops!

Where's a Good Cop When You Need One?

How many times have you been driving on the road, and some crazy passes you like you are sitting still? Or, someone aggressively changes lanes while everyone else is patiently waiting their turn?

And, right after witnessing a hostile action on your car; how many times have you then said, “where is a good cop when you need one?”

After decades of driving I’ve finally seen that good cop at the right time. Folk’s I have never witnessed this before. Yesterday while coming home from work, after nearly being blown off the road by cabby a copy actually pulled him over. I wanted to stop and kiss the cop.

And, this, in short, is what is wrong with today’s highway safety efforts----------- not enough good cops. Please SADD and MADD members visit our web site for more information on how to eliminate traffic crashes at: WWW.StopCarCrashes.com
