SADD Bicyclists MADD About All the Aggressive Cars:
Today’s highway safety lesson of the day comes from a recent “letter to editor” at WWW.Timesunion.com entitled:
“Bicyclists Need to Keep Up Speed”
The letter was in response to a bicyclist who had written, “drivers disregarding the rules of the road, were creating an unsafe environment for bicyclists.”
The driver responded by saying, “bicyclists held up drivers with their slow speed and needed to speed up.”
Well, both are right. Cars do drive like bats out of hell and bicyclists ride too slow. The bottom line we at highwaysafetyfanatics are focused on making roads safe for cars. Our feeling is that once the roads are safe for the much bigger, easier to see, cars; bicyclists may have a chance to share the road safely.
Until then here is a piece of advice for the bicycle enthusiasts; stay off the busy roads especially those with bike paths. Folks, bike paths scream the road is safe when it is not.
To summarize, MADD moms need to keep their SADD bicyclists off the busier roads, at least until we make the roads safe. Ask your kid about the route they take while riding their bike.

MADD & SADD About the Obvious needing study
US Withheld Data on Risks of Talking At the Wheel
Recently an article entitled “Distracted Drivers” told of how The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration withheld a request to study the dangers of cell phone usage while driving.
Wow, imagine highway safety experts needing to spend multiple millions to see if driving with a cell phone to one’s ear is dangerous. Folks, you need to be brain dead if you think this needs investigation. The news shouldn't be that a request to spend many millions on research wasn't made; the story should be that our so called safety experts actually considered studying it in the first place.
Here’s a hint: If the driver in front of you is traveling 20 mph slower than everyone else on your road, 9 times out of 10, he is talking on his cell phone. And, yes driving slow relative to other drivers is just as dangerous as driving faster than everyone else. See Highway Safety Law #1, Relative Speeding from last week’s posting.

SADD & MADD Assess Highway Safety Programs
Are your city’s roads safe?
In the last posting, I made the incredible claim that I could teach anyone how to quantitatively rate their city’s effectiveness in making its streets safe. Furthermore, such an assessment could be done in minutes by analyzing that city’s web site.
Don't you agree this would be a great project for both SADD and MADD members?
Anyway, here’s a hint. Go back a few postings and review my five laws for safe roads. The fact is, if we want safe, friendly roads rather than the dangerous, hate filled ones we presently have; all we need to do is make sure everyone drives according to our new five laws of the road.
Then, to rate a city’s performance at making sure everyone drives responsibly all we need to do is look for evidence that the five laws for safe roads is the gospel on that web site. The “Keeping It Simple” Highway Safety Program:
Pay $50 - $200 to take any “defensive course”; and you’ll be inundated with detail safe driving tips. For instance, I just took one the country’s most popular courses and stopped counting at 100 suggested dos and don’ts for avoiding accidents.
But, what if the real secret to defending your loved ones on our roads can be summed up in five easy rules?
That’s right I just gave you the five laws in last week’s blogs. But how can these be applied to eliminate practically all traffic crashes for first our inner families, then our communities.
Here’s a tip; it takes me about 20 minutes of riding with a driver in order for me to estimate this driver’s ability to avoid traffic accidents. Any MADD or SADD member would be ecstatic to have this ability.
And, if you think having this ability is great; what if you could review a city’s web site for 5 minutes; and estimate that city’s ability to keep its streets safe?

A Safe Driving Program for SADD, MADD, All
Arrive Alive by Avoiding Traffic Accidents
In the last five sessions we have provided the only five "safe driving" laws needed to eliminate almost all traffic accidents. By far the most important of the five profound laws is following with a 3-6 second gap between yourself and the car in front of you.
Interestingly, the other 4 laws provide for what has been described as a 360 degree air cushion.
But the real secret is that we need someone to enforce these new laws of the road. Both the MADD and SADD organizations can push this program.

Safe Driving Rule # 5 of 5: Keep Your Eyes Moving:
We all know driving can be rather boring and on occasions send us into a blank stare. For instance, ever drive through a busy intersection; or make a left in front of an 18 wheeler and think back:
How did I do that? I don't even remember going through that intersection of
seeing that big truck.
Folks, keep those eyes moving and concentrate; your life and family's lives depends on it.
