New Laws for Road Safety

Relative Speeding Law 1 of 5:


For the next five days I will give you the five laws that we need ever driver to follow on our roads.

The first is Relative Speeding. It is when an unsafe driver is traveling 15 or more miles per hour faster than the surrounding traffic. You’ve seen this many times whenever someone comes up on you real fast and you say where did he (she) come from?

In fact, doing away with relative speeding is the main principle behind setting speed limits. Without getting into the minutia of the whys and wherefores, just remember if you want your family to be safe on the roads traffic law #1 is:

Traffic Law #1: Set your speed at about the same speed as everyone else

Yes, that means if the posted speed limit is 45 and everyone is traveling 60, you need to go approximately 60. Just don’t give the police officer my name to get you out of the ticket.

Even if you are an expert at avoiding collisions, a super safe driver, you still violate two of the top three safe driving principles:
One, you are a relative microscopic entity sharing the roads with much larger vehicles. In other words, it doesn’t take much of an accident to do some very big damage to the bike rider.
Second, your microscopic size hides you from the other driver. Folks, no one see you.

Road Safety For Bikers and Pedestrians

Enforce the damn laws, please!

Today I was driving on a busy urban highway with a deadly combination. It had lots of speeding vehicles right adjacent to unaware pedestrians and bicycle riders.
In fact, within about 100 yards of each other I saw both a pedestrian and biker crossing the road at mid-block as in J-walking.
One of the two was completely day-dreaming and acted as though she didn’t know where she was.
Folks, bicycle and pedestrians are at a great disadvantage to the automobile in a battle for road space. Both weigh almost nothing relative to the car and yes get hurt or killed when hit.
In my state, in my town we are spending big time resources to help bikes and pedestrians stay safe on our dangerous roads. However, nothing I mean nothing helps when the smaller road user in just plain dumb. Please use the marked X-walks, green signals, and keep your head in the game. Please don’t cross busy roads while listening to a CD with earphones.

Road Safety For All or None:

While driving home from vacation today, saw dozens of motorcyclists. Most had no helmet and too many of them had unsafe driving habits.
My theory about motorcycle safety on today’s dangerous roads is simple. Roads will never be safe for two wheelers until said roads are safe for four wheelers. Today, one takes a huge risk by simply getting into the family car and driving to the supermarket.
If this is the case, and it is, let me assure you the same trip via a motorcycle or bike is suicide. Do it without a helmet and with unsafe driving habits and you won’t be on this earth long.
